Week 1: Introduction

Hello all, my name is Emily McLean!

I am a senior this year and I am majoring in Marketing, I am really hoping to get in to either medical supplies sales or pharmaceutical sales when I graduate. I am from Boulder, Colorado and really love everything about it!

Things that really interest me are all activities that are outdoors, I love to hike and camp. This summer I was able to climb a 14,000-foot mountain in Colorado called Mt. Missouri, the feeling when you finally get to the top is indescribable! The cool thing about climbing most of the 14’ers in Colorado is that once you reach the top you can see the peaks of several other mountains not far off!

The most important thing that happened to me this past summer though is the internship I had. I was lucky to intern with a company based out of Denver, Colorado called Craftworks. This is the parent company that owns 15 restaurant/breweries that range all over the United States. I was able to intern with the Director of Marketing and it became a very educational and fun internship. I was able to take a lot from it and see how real world marketing applies to a range of levels within the food industry. At the same time I was also working in one of the restaurants in the Denver area so I felt it to be incredibly beneficial to see all levels of operation and gain a better appreciation.

I am involved in a sorority on campus and it has been a wonderful experience for me, I feel that I have gained so much from being a member and grown as a person. It was initially scary for me to come to Oklahoma from Colorado Freshman year knowing absolutely no one but the sorority I am in really helped ease that transition.

I look forward to getting to read all of your blogs throughput the semester and to get to know you all and your creative sides!

  1. Hi Emily! Thank you for this very unique post--it was very interesting to read about you and get to know you a little. One thing that jumped out at me was your love of the outdoors, and the fact that you climbed a 14,000-foot mountain this summer. Wow! One of my close friends also got to do that this summer, and I'm a little jealous about how awesome that is. I love to hike too, so I might need to add that to my bucket list. :)

  2. Hey! That's really cool that you're from Colorado! I know you get this all the time, and I hate myself for asking, but what made you decide to go to OU?
Your mountain climbing experience sounds really cool too. I've only been to Colorado twice and we never did anything like that except for skiing, which I did not enjoy. Maybe the next time I go I can go hiking!

  3. What a fabulous picture, Emily! Wow! You can really see all those peaks in the distance. It's beautiful!

And listen, what you said about marketing and your Craftworks internship connects with something I found just this week - I went for the first time to a restaurant called Tijuana Flats... it is a chain (mostly in Florida), and I was so impressed not just by the food but also all the fun way they presented themselves, with the story of their company that you could read in a little flipchart at the table, and some great posters on the walls. So I looked it up because I wanted to find an image of the poster, and it led me to an article about the company that did their marketing. I thought it was so interesting because they really were doing something different that caught my attention and made me want to go back there... in addition to the yummy food!

  4. Wow, I have never climbed a mountain but it is on my bucket list. I am very jealous you got to do that. How long did that take you?
Also, that's amazing regarding the internship. I don't know about you, but once I got an internship, I fell even more in love with my major. I think getting to actually apply what you learn in school is amazing. I have actually found that I learn more when I do things such as internships than when I am just reading from a textbook. I am a kinetic learner though.
Also, what sorority are you in? I am in one as well, and I think being in one gives people a family and home away from home. I find being in a house a huge blessing.
Anyways, best of luck with this semester! It was great getting to learn a little bit about you!

  5. Hi Emily!

I loved reading your introduction! You seem like such an interesting person and I love that you are an out of state student. People from places other than Oklahoma often bring such great diversity and fresh ideas to the University of Oklahoma so that is definitely awesome.

I am also jealous of your internship! That sounds like so much fun and I'm glad that it made you fall in love with your major even more.

  6. Colorado sounds like an awesome place to grow up! I visited there one time many years ago when I was in high school. I didn’t climb any mountains, but I tried my hand at mountain biking. It was disastrous! I nearly died and I came away with a bunch of cuts and bruises. I still had an absolute blast though. Once you get going, it’s a really awesome feeling to bike on mountainous terrain. Anyway, I look forward to reading more from you this semester!

  7. Hi Emily! Love your post! You seem like a really awesome and interesting person. Don't you just love summer internships? I think they provide such great experience for college students and you can learn so much! I did a summer internship in Washington, DC last summer and it was fantastic. I also think it's cool you got to climb a mountain too! I've never had that kind of experience! So good getting to know you!

  8. Hi Emily. I think the style of your blog is really cool, coming on it for the first time. Congratulations on making it to your senior year. I think it’s awesome that you are this outdoorsy person. Not much outdoor things to do here in Oklahoma though. So it must be different for you being here in Oklahoma. Good luck with your future aspirations.

  9. Hey Emily! I love colorado it is so beautiful! I wish that we had more areas to hike here in Oklahoma. I can only imagine how great it must have been to climb that mountain! Definitely something I want on my bucket list! My father is a pharmaceutical salesman and it is a great field to get into! Him and my mom actually go to go to Jamaica for a business trip! Good luck with all of that and it was great to learn a bit about you!

  10. Emily, I am also a senior this year too! We're so close to graduation! It's kind of exciting, but also a little scary. Seems like you have your future career path figured out, and it is great you have already got some good experience too.

I am also incredibly jealous of the fact you live in Colorado! How exciting and adventurous, and absolutely beautiful that must be. I have been to Colorado and it is always an adventure. I think my favorite thing is white water rafting, but then again, I have never climbed a mountain. I have only driven up one and the views were incredible! But I would love to climb Mt. Missouri one day.

Well I look forward to reading your work, and hope you have a great semester in this class!!

  11. I love the picture you included! It looks so beautiful there. :D I miss the mountains.

It sounds like you really know what you want to do with your life! I find it so admirable that you've been able to do internships. Were they pretty easy to come by or did you have to have fight people for it? hehe Also, how did you get interested in medical supplies/pharmaceuticals? That's one of those things that I know is necessary but it just never really occurs to me that those jobs exist!

I hope you have a fantastic senior year and don't suffer too much from senioritis!

  12. Emily,

I think that it is so awesome, and bold, that you decided to venture out of state to attend college. I can tell you that I don’t think that I could do it! I have never been hiking, but the thought of climbing a mountain and seeing the surrounding sites sounds breathtaking! Your internship sounded like it was an absolute blast. To be able to work in a restaurant, while interning at the corporate level, must have been very insightful! Have a great rest of the year, and I look forward to reading your stories throughout the rest of the semester!

  13. Hey Emily! Thank you so much for leaving a comment on my Bible Women storytelling post. I really appreciate your feedback! It sounds like you've gotten to travel and do some pretty awesome things. I love Colorado! Last year my family and I travelled to Rock Mountain National Park and Estes Park. It was so beautiful and we climbed several mountains. I was totally out of breath, but it was definitely worth it. I love hiking and being outdoors, there's nothing else quite like it. Good luck in the rest of your semester!

  14. Emily,
It is really cool that you climb mountains! My wife and I are homebodies most of the time, so that would be a crazy thing for us to try. This weekend we visited my mom, and she wanted to go hiking in a canyon. We climbed a small rocky hill and felt super impressed with ourselves. I don't see ourselves ever climbing mountains in the future, though.

  15. Emily, besides sharing the same name, we have so much in common!! I have hiked some of the 14'ers in Colorado like Pike's Peak and Mt Missouri. I love hiking! I spent a couple weeks in Colorado this summer in Winter Park, Boulder, and Denver with my best friend who goes to CU. I agree the view from the top of the mountains is the best part. This summer was perfect weather in Winter Park and we hiked all day, everyday. I love just packing a backpack with and lunch and some water and spending the whole day hiking and exploring. I have applied to grad school at CU in Aurora and got to visit the campus this summer. Hopefully I will get accepted and could possibly move there. Of course, it will be hard get myself to study and not to spend all my time hiking.

  16. Hi Emily!
Wow you seem adventurous! I think it is so awesome that you are able to climb mountains that are 14,000 feet tall!! How long does that take?
I think your internship sounds awesome. I love restaurants so much so I think it would be really interesting to learn more about all of the positions and about how restaurants are ran. I also think that Denver would be a really neat place to work for that job. I know it is a great city with lots of fun restaurants and breweries. I would love to travel to Denver soon! I have only been once and it was when I was about 13 or so I would love to go back. I have family there and I love the colder weather!!! I am looking forward to reading your stories this semester :)

  17. Hi, Emily! It's great to meet someone else from Colorado! It's so great that you climbed a 14er! I haven't yet but we've talked about hiking Mt. Shavano near the Buena Vista/Salida, Colorado area. Your internship sounds like it was also an amazing opportunity! Denver is a great place to live around for opportunities such as that! Nice to meet you through your blog. Have a great rest of your semester!

  18. Hey Emily, that is an awesome view from the top of the mountain! I've never climbed up a real mountain, but it is definitely something I want to do later on. The restaurant business is so interesting to me, especially how quickly the consumer can affect business (which is not normally the case for most engineering/manufacturing businesses). I can imagine that it was fun to see the top and the bottom of the restaurant business, but I think it would be much better to be as high as possible in that chain.

That's awesome that both of your brothers decided to become Army officers. I appreciate them as well as your support. Good luck and congratulations on being so close to graduation!

  19. Hey Emily! It was great getting to read a little bit more about you this week! I do not know how you were able to come to flat Oklahoma for college from the beautiful mountains of Colorado, but I am so happy that Alpha Phi was able to make that transition easier for you! I wish you the best of luck with your marketing future and I am sure you will do a wonderful job with it!
